Robert A. Kimmelheim, MS, DO, FACP, FACR, is an interventional pain management specialist at The Spine Group, which has locations in New Braunfels, Kyle, Floresville, San Antonio, La Vernia, and Gonzales, Texas.
Following his undergraduate studies at Temple University in Philadelphia, Dr. Kimmelheim entered a master's/PhD program in physiology at the Temple University School of Medicine. As he was completing his master's thesis, he realized some limitations in the direction he was headed and raised the bar and entered the field of medicine. Dr. Kimmelheim enrolled in the medical program at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) in 1979.
After earning his degree from PCOM in 1983, Dr. Kimmelheim entered the Navy to continue his training. Entering the Navy was one of the best decisions he could've made – a decision that was couched in many conversations with his parents (and mentors). He then spent the next four years in Virginia, as part of the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia, and one year aboard the aircraft carrier, CV67 USS John F Kennedy. Those four years were instrumental in Dr. Kimmelheim's growth and development. He then spent the next 2-3 years at the Naval War College and Naval Hospital in Newport, Rhode Island, serving as an internist and the head of internal medicine.
Dr. Kimmelheim then entered a fellowship training program back at Temple University Hospital. His decision to pursue rheumatology as a career was influenced by another one of his mentors. As you can tell, Dr. Kimmelheim views mentors and mentoring others as a special privilege.
During his fellowship training, he met his wife, who was a psychiatry resident. Together they have three boys – triplets born in 1994. Following his training, Dr. Kimmelheim joined a rheumatology practice in Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania, in 1991, following a brief stint" in Saudi Arabia with the US Navy in Operation Desert Storm.
From 1991-2017 Dr. Kimmelheim was with Arthritis & Rheumatic Disease Consultants (ARDC) in Chestnut Hill. After ten years as a member of a two-person group, he took over the group as the sole provider. In 2017 seeing some of the winds of health care taking a downward turn, Dr. Kimmelheim felt the need to make a greater impact and began looking for the opportunity. This led him to BSW in Temple, Texas, where he was brought on as the Rheumatology Division Director. In that capacity, he had a more comprehensive opportunity to connect and influence the future of medicine – the trainees. However, some events at home (Philadelphia) and COVID took me back to Philadelphia. As those issues resolved themselves, Dr. Kimmelheim's love for Texas brought him back.
